Each essay in this portfolio took a good amount of time to revise and edit—some more than others. It was last summer when I moved into Des Moines, Iowa, and much like the previous few summers I planned on playing Summer AAU Basketball, which is an organization where you travel around the country, playing against other teams around the country over the Spring and Summer.
I was fortunate enough to meet the right people in Des Moines to direct me to an AAU program called Kingdom Hoops, portfolio essay for english class, located on the northern outskirts of the city.
From word of mouth, I knew this was the premiere AAU program in the state of Iowa. When I visited the facility for the first time, I could see why people had made such a claim. I was instantly struck by how spacious and clean the facility was, and how many kids I saw of all ages and genders playing on the courts. The bright red and black painting on the floor was a very eye catching color scheme that seemed to complement the whole place.
I showed up about an hour before practice of the summer in hopes that I could meet the owner and coach, Jake Sullivan.
Jake was a former Portfolio essay for english class State University basketball player, and is now a well-respected coach and mentor in the world of basketball.
When I first met him he had just gotten done working out three boys that looked to be about 13 years old. He was energetic and welcomed me into the program immediately, portfolio essay for english class. He was very cordial and told me how glad he was to have me on the team. When practice was over that night, portfolio essay for english class, I talked to Jake again. He asked where I was from, which AAU programs I have played on before, and a few more questions pertaining to my basketball background.
Namely, his history of mission work in Ghana, Africa. Mission work is always something I would like to be a part of. I have never been on a mission trip before, but the thought of it interests me a great deal. There is no more gratifying feeling than assisting people in need, whether they live down the street or on the other side of the globe. Hearing about what Jake did for a living as a whole captivated me. From doing mission work all the way in Ghana to developing young athletes in Des Moines, I knew that I wanted to follow in his footsteps and pursue a career similar to his.
If someone asked me a couple days before that first practice what I wanted to do for a living, I would say I wanted to be a Basketball coach. Being a basketball coach caters to my one lifelong interest, which is Basketball. Jake, however, is a coach who is also the owner of an entire Basketball facility, portfolio essay for english class. All the while he helps people who are much less fortunate than we are via frequent mission trips to Ghana, Africa with his colleagues that also work for Kingdom Hoops.
The job he has caters to my Basketball interest, but also to my willingness to assist the less fortunate, and my potential hope of owning and managing a business in the future.
My time spent playing for, and getting portfolio essay for english class know Jake made a solid impact on what I would like to someday achieve. This impact made me decide to major in business, and hopefully start my career working for him, portfolio essay for english class, as me and him have discussed before.
I am aware that not everyone can do what Jake Sullivan is doing; not everyone has what it takes. But when your finally tell yourself that you know what you are going to do with your life, you also accept a challenge, perhaps the biggest challenge of your entire life.
You know you will have to hit the ground running and will have to begin taking on new challenges, portfolio essay for english class, learning new things, and doing tasks you never thought you would have to do before to reach your goals. I know that I will not be able to become a big time corporation owner right out of college. I may have to work a lesser job under Jake, or possibly someone else in order to get to where I want to be. Fortunately, I feel that I have what it takes to someday reach my goal of owning my own basketball facility, and hopefully reaching out to the less fortunate in the process.
It is going to be a challenge like none other, but it is a challenge I am ready to accept. This project should demonstrate to the audience how I can analyze and figure out advertisements in magazines. I can dissect the meaning of ads, and can pinpoint what it is about an advertisement that is intriguing to the viewers. What we see in this Chipotle advertisement is a burrito placed in the center of the page with bolded font lettering across the top of the page.
Below the burrito there is a short paragraph describing the taste of the burrito and persuades the audience to try one. Then under the paragraph in the center there is the signature Chipotle logo. I feel that this Chipotle advertisement is very effective in selling their monster burritos because of how the text ties in with the burrito. The bold text and the picture are similar because they are both bulky—both strike the viewer immediately when he or she looks at this advertisement.
With advertisements like this, it is no secret how Chipotle is renowned as the number one burrito chain restaurant in the United States. In a government that emphasizes self-regulation of consumers in terms of fast food Henderson 9people are always searching for new places to eat and fulfill their cravings of food that may affect their health in a negative way. That is when advertising comes into play.
It is not merely a coincidence that all popular chain fast food restaurants, chip brands, or candy brands have effective advertising strategies—they obtained such popularity because of their advertising strategies, like accenting pictures of their products to make it look more appetizing or intriguing.
Whether it is their text, logo, image, or slogan, all of these companies do a great job in making sure that they stand distinguished. When it comes to making sure consumers remember an advertisement, the best thing an advertiser can do is emphasize the elements in their ad. Another thing that makes this advertisement effective is the burrito wrapped in tin foil.
I feel that the tin foil instinctively triggers mystery to the viewers. No one knows what it is really behind the tin foil other than a burritobut no one is sure how it would taste, or what is in it.
This gets the viewer to imagine all of the possibilities of what could be in the burrito—chicken, steak, rice, guacamole? Being that no ingredients are shown in the burrito, the viewer portfolio essay for english class subconsciously create his or her ideal burrito in their head, effectively making them crave a Chipotle burrito even more.
Another thing that makes it a good thing for the advertisement is the emphasis that they put on the size of the burrito. The advertisers know that the size of the burrito warrants a feeling of indulgency for the viewers. They feel viewers will cling to such a mysteriously tasty, yet strikingly unhealthy product. This is not only a human trait, but a trait amongst animals to abandon food they know is healthy for them and be portfolio essay for english class to food that has less nutritional value.
